Take Up Your Cross

When you think of Jesus, what do you think? Is he just someone who died for our sins? Is he everything to you? Or is he just an afterthought to you sometimes think about? Jesus has done everything for us. He has taught and lived the life we were meant to live, and died to save us from sin. Jesus paved the way that we should be walking. I would like to break down what it means to follow Jesus.

1 Peter 2:21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

As I stated before, Jesus has laid out what it means to leave for the kingdom and to serve the Father correctly. If we want to serve Him, we need to follow Jesus. Jesus is the only way to get to the Father. I want to explain a little what it means to follow Jesus.

Mark 8:34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

What this means is that if you want to follow Jesus, you must forget about living for yourself and live for the kingdom. To follow Jesus, you can not let the world influence you and your lifestyle. To follow Jesus, you rely on what God provides you with and trust in Him. Jesus tells a young man how to follow him.

Matthew 19:21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Following Jesus means thinking of the kingdom first. It means letting go of worldly possessions and living according to the Word of God. When we follow Jesus, we have to be prepared for people to persecute us. As a follower, we are going to face all kinds of judgement and people are going reject you. I don’t want to scare anyone, just want to be truthful.

2 Timothy 3:12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

Following Jesus won’t be easy and you will endure a lot of hardships. You will face a lot of criticism and judgement from the world. But in the end, it will all be worth it. God will bless you in ways you can’t imagine possible.

Luke 6:22 Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

Jesus has shown us what to expect for being true to the Father and living for the kingdom. The apostles were persecuted many of times for the kingdom. We know that it won’t be easy and we will have a lot of difficult times for the sake of following Jesus. But it is worth it in every way. Jesus died to save us from our ways, we should be able to do the same and break free from sin. Though it will not happen overnight and it takes a lifetime to do. We can do it, we have to apply ourselves to the Word of God and know Jesus. Then when we are done here in this world, our inheritance is the kingdom and eternal life.

In conclusion, I want to ask this. What are you living for, Is your life about what you want and your desires? Or is it living for God and the kingdom? Are you consumed by the desires and cares of the world? Or are you living for the kingdom? I pray that this may help to open eyes and help you analyze what you are truly living for. The only way into heaven is through Jesus, we need to follow in his example. As I write this, I examine myself and my ways too. No one is perfect and we all need to be aware of ourselves and what our motives are. I am just here to reach out to you as well. I thank you for your time and God bless you all! Jesus is the way!
